Atlantic City has a long history as a resort town. In fact, the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk began as an effort by hotel owners to keep sand out of their lobbies.   1. Pressuring you: If you feel like your lender is pressuring you to do anything, proceed with caution. Lenders may want you to accept terms or sign papers you don’t understand, or pressure you to sign immediately when you need time to consider things. If you feel pressured in any way, it’s a good idea to tell the lender that you will not make a decision or sign anything until you thoroughly understand it and have thought things through. If he or she continues to pressure you, look for another mortgage lender.
  2. Patronizing you: Don’t allow a lender to tell you that you can’t possibly understand the complexity of a home equity loan or a home refinance. Make sure you understand every point of your loan contract; insist that the lender explain until you do.
  3. Asking you to lie on an application: Don’t allow a lender to talk you into doing anything unethical or illegal by saying that “people do it all the time.” This is a good time to find another mortgage lender. If he or she wants you to lie, there’s a good chance he or she will lie and is not trustworthy.
  4. Making unrealistic promises: Be cautious if your lender makes promises that he or she can’t keep, like getting you a great interest rate, even though you have bad credit. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  5. Contract fees and details change: If your final contract is significantly different from the Good Faith Estimate you got when you applied for a home loan, make sure you thoroughly understand and agree with every change before you sign. Don’t accept any changes without questioning them.
  6. Your gut feeling: If something feels wrong or bad, find another lender. Your intuition is correct more often than you realize, and it’s a good idea to trust it.
